Homemade Hair Bows!

As we were planning for Lilly's baby shower (yes, I'm crazy and begged my friends to let me help plan my own shower) one of the things I knew I had to have was a headband making station. I thought it would be so cool for my family and friends to design something for her.
The problem was the budget. I went out to the craft stores to buy bows and ohmiword. The little flowers and bows were darling but SO expensive!!! I already had to buy the elastic to make them and that's not cheap either! So, I was blessed enough to stumble upon a blog that had a tutorial for making your own bows out of your old shirts! I can't remember what blog is was and I'm SO bummed...but I'll include a mini-tutorial so you get the gist.
I had a bag full of Goodwill bound clothing and I had asked my husband like, a million times to get it out of the house. When I found this idea I ran into the spare bedroom and thank GOODNESS he didn't take it yet! Here was one time I was thankful for procrastination!!!
So I found some shirts and dresses with pretty patterns and set to work!
Here is one of the shirts that was headed out:
Cut a piece of the shirt...

Then, cut out some circles. Start with a fairly large one and then get gradually smaller.

Stack 'em up and get ready because here is where you have some options. You can either get a needle and thread and just make it happen ( I do NOT sew...I literally took that needle up and down and bunched it together until it made a cute flower-esque shape) OR you can hot glue the layers together to make more of a flat shaped flower (see pink flower). We made lots of flowers using both methods.

The sewin' ain't pretty but it worked!

Final product! Yaaaaaay!
Then, we used a hot glue gun to attach it to the pretty elastic that we bought from the craft store!

I had a friend over to help me make lots more for my baby shower (baby shower post forthcoming). It was really fun! The coolest part (that I didn't foresee) was the idea that some of the clothing I used had special meaning, (even though it was in a Goodwill pile LOL) so it was like a hand-me-down for my daughter. For example, there was a step-show that I was in my sophomore year in college and I made a bow out of the shirts we wore that night...I don't know, it just seemed kind of cool to pass that along!
I highly recommend this DIY project!!
